After some tweaking and notably removing the towpaths from default view (you can still turn them on in the menu), the map will now load faster. It seems that if the default view doesn’t have too much in focus then the map loads in under 5s on a 3G connection – which is good enough. The towing paths were making some slower handsets crash when scrolling around so those have been hidden from the default view as well.
Some new data has been imported from canalmap.net – some 2,500 map markers have been added such as pubs, moorings, services and boat yards filling the map up nicely – but probably meaning the tow paths had to be hidden. Hopefully there is a way to optimise the map for Google Maps – or locate a suitable other platform to display everything canal map related in Google Maps
